Roadtrip Inspired Watercolors
The idea for the Postcard series came while planning a roadtrip in early 2022. If you know me at all, you know I love to travel, with pandemic fatigue and a northern Michigan winter setting in, I had a fierce case cabin fever. Since April of 2020 when the world shut down my husband and I had been laying low at home in Northern Michigan, it was time to get out. In an effort to avoid covid rich environments we didn't want to fly or stay at a resort, so we decided to take an 7 week roadtrip through the South while we worked remotely and stayed at airbnbs.
Before we took off, I prepped a traveling art bag full of art supplies and pre-cut postcard sized papers. Watercolors are relatively easy to travel with. I created artwork all along the way and mailed them to people as postcards. Most of them made it to their destination, I do know of one that sadly got 'lost in the mail'. I posted the paintings on Instagram and Facebook, my hope was to offer my friends and family something different to look at on social media, something lighter than pandemic stats.
My husband and I went hiking and chasing waterfalls in north Georgia, discovered the beauty of the coastal wetlands from South Carolina to North Florida, soaked up sunrises and sunsets along the way, and explored cities like Savannah and New Orleans. As usual, I focused on the natural beauty of the landscapes we found. Below you will see a selection of the postcard paintings. I hope to continue this project on future trips or even while I am banging around Northern Michigan.
